Full interview of the lawyer Pedro Fernández Bernal in ABC.es:

Making the decision to move to another country is not always easy. Sometimes, the feeling of attachment, whether for work, family or any other reason, prevents you from taking the step. However, other times the difficulty lies in the necessary procedures, popularly known as ‘paperwork’. This is the case of people who need a valid and valid visa to cross the border.

Despite the difficult years of crisis in Spain, our nation continues to be a desired destination for thousands of foreigners, who are not always aware of all the information necessary to enter legally. In ABC.es, we break down the most frequent doubts with the help of Pedro Fernández Bernal, an expert lawyer in foreigners of the Madrid Bar Association.

What is a visa needed for?

A visa is required to legally enter Spain. Those who need a visa must meet other requirements, such as proof of having at least 60 euros per day for expenses, proof of a credit card or visa, and a place to stay (in the case of tourist trips, a hotel reservation is required). These requirements are reviewed by the Border Police.

Are there different types of visas?

Yes, there are different types depending on the purpose of the trip. Some examples are:

  • Stay visa (for tourism)
  • Student visa
  • Non-profit residence visa (for stays of more than 90 days without gainful employment)
  • Work visa (currently limited, mainly for skilled workers and nationals of Peru and Chile)

Why are some countries exempt and others have to meet numerous requirements?

There are several reasons that make access from certain countries difficult: difficult economic situations, mass emigration, or armed conflicts. On the other hand, exempt countries usually have a stable economic situation and a reliable security policy. However, there are exceptions, such as Venezuela, whose citizens do not need a visa but must comply with other requirements upon arrival in Spain.

How much does it cost to get a visa to enter Spain?

Consular fees vary according to the type of visa and must be paid by money order. Some general fees are:

  • General visas for non-U.S. nationals: $82.00 (children 6-12 years old: $48.00)
  • For nationals of the European Union (some countries): $48.00
  • For studies: $160.00
  • Temporary work: $190.00
  • Self-employed: $270.00
  • Non-profit residency visas: $140.00

What is the validity of each visa?

The validity of visas varies according to the type:

  • Tourist visa: up to 90 days
  • Study visa: 6 to 12 months
  • Work visa: generally 1 year

Which individuals are not granted a visa?

Visas are not granted to persons with a criminal record, those prohibited from entering the Schengen area, those who do not meet the economic requirements, or those with an expulsion order in force.
